Life at Vane Hill

Comfort, choice and dignity in everyday, tailored for both high-dependency and lower-dependency residents

At Vane Hill, every corner of our home is designed with our residents in mind, whether you need more hands-on support or enjoy greater independence. Perched above the harbour in Torquay, our twin Victorian houses offer lovely sea views across Torbay and a peaceful hilltop setting that’s still within walking distance of the town centre and the beach.

We care for up to 32 residents, with a mix of 14 single rooms and 9 double (shared) rooms. Each room is equipped with furniture, internet access, TV and a call-bell system, all intended to help you feel comfortable, connected and safe.

Every day at Vane Hill offers the opportunity to grow skills, make choices and enjoy meaningful moments. Whether preparing home-cooked meals (with ingredients from our own vegetable allotments), getting involved in laundry or garden tasks, or simply relaxing with views over Torbay, we aim to strike a balance of robust care and structure for those who need it and freedom, comfort and social connection for those who are more independent.

Our Rooms

Vane Hill offers 32 places across two beautifully converted Victorian houses, blending character, comfort and thoughtful design. Some rooms are single, others are shared double rooms, ideal for couples who wish to stay together. Many rooms offer wonderful views across Torbay, adding light, breath and beauty to daily life. Each room comes furnished, with internet access and a call-bell system. We encourage residents to personalise their space and retain a connection to home. Whether someone needs more intense support or enjoys more independence, the room environment is designed to feel familiar, soothing and respectful of individual dignity.

Dining

Mealtimes at Vane Hill are more than just a time to eat, they are moments of nourishment, community and choice. We have two dining rooms where meals are home-cooked, flavoursome and often enriched with seasonal ingredients, some grown in our own allotments. Residents are encouraged to take part in meal preparation when they wish, helping to reconnect with everyday skills and supporting independence. The dining experience is friendly, relaxed and respectful of individual dietary needs

Communal Lounges

Our communal lounges are warm, welcoming spaces where residents can choose how they spend time, whether in quiet reflection or in social connection. Soft seating, natural light and views help create familiarity, calm and comfort. These lounges are places where people share conversations, read, enjoy music or simply be together. They are central to building community, offering a place of rest, reassurance and belonging.

Activities

Life at Vane Hill is active, varied and meaningful. We run a full activities programme designed to respect everyone’s abilities and interests. Whether it’s cooking or gardening, creative arts, reading or social games, there is something to suit different moods and energy levels.

Residents are encouraged to help around the home, in the kitchen, laundry or garden to regain life skills and a sense of purpose. Everything we offer is intended to strengthen independence, build confidence and make each day purposeful.

Private Gardens

Our gardens, patios and vegetable allotments are carefully tended and beloved spaces. They offer a quiet, safe outdoors where residents can enjoy fresh air, nurture plants, grow vegetables or simply sit and feel peace. The private garden is especially important for those living with ARBD or Korsakoff’s syndrome, providing gentle sensory stimulus, seasonal interest and a sense of continuity with nature. In summer, barbecues or outdoor social moments add joy and shade.

Games Room

For stimulation, enjoyment and gentle challenge, our games room plays an important role in everyday life. Here, residents can take part in activities like pool, board games, reading, puzzles, or use computers with internet access. It’s a place for laughter, friendly competition or simply the comfort of familiar pastimes. The variety gives choice so people can engage as much or as little as they feel able.

Minibus Service

Vane Hill has its own minibus, which is more than just transport, it’s a gateway to experience. Regular trips are organised to places across Devon and the South West, including walks in Dartmoor, visits to the coast or social venues, all tailored to the needs and interests of residents. These outings offer stimulation, connection with the wider community and moments of enjoyment beyond the home. For many, these are highlights of the week.
